First computer keyboard history

The History of the Computer Keyboard

One of the first breakthroughs in keyboard technology was the invention of the teletype machine. Also referred to as the teleprinter, the technology has been around since the mid-1800s and was improved by inventors such as Royal Earl House, David Edward Hughes, Emile Baudot, Donald Murray, Charles L. Krum, Edward Kleinschmidt, and Frederick G. Creed.

First computing devices with teletype machines. The first digital computer known as the ENIAC that was completed in 1946 used a teletype machine to input data into the computer. Although much different than today's computer keyboards, the teletype machine punched holes into a punch card and then was fed into a card-reader.

The first full-sized digital computer in history was developed in 1944. Called the Mark I, this computer was used only for calculations and weighed five tons. Despite its size and limited ability it was the first of many that would start off generations of computer development and growth.

Computer keyboards descend directly from teletypes or teleprinters, devices that could send and receive messages from one teleprinter to another or to many teleprinters. These devices used dedicated telephone circuits, switched networks like the phone company, radio waves, and microwaves.

Early computer keyboards were first adapted from the punch card and teletype technologies. In 1946, the Eniac computer used a punched card reader as its input and output device. In 1948, the Binac computer used an electromechanically controlled typewriter to both input data directly onto magnetic tape (for feeding the computer data) and to print results.

Keyboard history: From typewriters to computer keyboards

The origins of keyboards can be found in the first typing devices patented or created back in the 1700s and 1800s. According to documents, the first patent for a typing machine belonged to the Englishman Henry Mill, back in 1714. Since then, many other typing devices have been patented, but none of...

The earliest PC keyboards from IBM, instead of using a membrane that registered a key press by being pushed to make contact, used a printed circuit board with exposed squares of copper that were connected to circuits that detected the approach of another conductor on the key through capacitance.

Physically, computer keyboards are an arrangement of rectangular or near-rectangular buttons, or "keys". Keyboards typically have characters engraved or printed on the keys; in most cases, each press of a key corresponds to a single written symbol. However, to produce some symbols requires

Keyboards Are Not Equal. Keyboards feel different, and prospective buyers should spend time testing any laptop computer before purchasing it. The Dvorak keyboard layout was an attempt to increase typing efficiency over the widely used QWERTY layout familiar to most typists. As a competing standard, it turns out that being first was better than being more efficient as evidenced by the vast majority of computer users learning, using, and ultimately preferring the QWERTY configuration of keys. Today, most of the major computer operating systems support the Dvorak keyboard and this layout is the only other layout besides QWERTY to be an ANSI standard.

On laptops, you can use the trackpad, located below the keyboard, instead of a mouse. Simply drag your finger across the trackpad to move the pointer on the screen. Some trackpads do not have buttons, so you'll either press or tap the trackpad to click. The keyboard allows you to type letters, numbers, and words into the computer.

QWERTY: A Short History of the Computer Keyboard

Beginning with the humble typewriter, the history of the modern computer keyboard is a long and interesting one. In 1868, Christopher Latham Sholes patented the first practical typewriter, notably without a QWERTY keyboard. A decade later, in 1877, the Remington Company began mass marketing typewriters which did feature the QWERTY we know and are familiar with today.

Although there are several beliefs as to why this particular keyboard layout was developed, one explanation is that the QWERTY layout was meant to reduce the physical limitations of typewriters at that time. On early typewriters, typists would press a key that pushed a metal hammer to strike an inked ribbon, which would then mark the keyed character on a paper before the hammer returned to its rest position.

The history of computers starts out about 2000 years ago in Babylonia (Mesopotamia), at the birth of the abacus, a wooden rack holding two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. The QWERTY keyboard layout became popular after it was released as a part of the Remington No. 2 typewriter in 1878. This layout was created by Christopher Sholes, but many myths surround the reason for its creation. Some say that he created the QWERTY keyboard to separate common letter combinations and keep typewriter keys from jamming.

The machine operator was called the computer. The first aids to computation were purely mechanical devices which required the operator to set up the initial values of an elementary arithmetic operation, then manipulate the device to obtain the result. Later, computers represented numbers in a continuous form, for instance distance along a scale, rotation of a shaft, or a voltage.
